Plot Summary:
Two stories elapsing in parallel. One in current times in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The other in Coyoacan, Mexico in 1937.
Julieta is a young Argentinean actress, aged 26. She accepts to play the role of a student who is doing a research about the so-called Moscow Trials, the series of show trials staged by Stalin in 1936-38 that condemned and executed most of Lenin’s Bolshevik comrades-in-arms in the October Revolution of 1917. Leon Trotsky, however exiled, was the main defendant in these trials. In Mexico,1937, Trotsky is subjected to an inquiry conducted by a commission headed by the well-known American philosopher and educator John Dewey –the so-called Dewey Commission. The commission is a counter-trial, asked for by the exiled revolutionary in order to have a chance to refute and deny all of Stalin’s accusations.
Time is altered, past and present live together. Julieta and Leon Trotsky, two characters from different times, are moving towards a convergence. We may find an answer in the question that Julieta asks at the end of the film.
